What is activated carbon?
Activated carbon is a porous material that removes organic compounds from liquids and gases through a process called "adsorption". In adsorption, organic molecules contained in a liquid or gas are attracted and bound to the pore surface of the activated carbon as the liquid or gas passes through.
Adsorption occurs on the inner surface of the activated carbon, called the adsorbent. During the adsorption process, the liquid or gas passes through the highly porous structure of the activated carbon. The compounds to be removed, called adsorbates, diffuse onto the surface of the adsorbent and are retained due to the attractive force.
The main raw material used to produce our activated carbon is bituminous coal, which is crushed, graded and processed in low temperature roasters and high temperature activation ovens. Activation develops the pore structure of the carbon. By adjusting the activation process, different pores are developed for specific purification applications.
